Rep. Juan Vargas Slams Trump’s Day-One Attacks on Immigrants, Border Communities
WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Juan Vargas (CA-52) released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting immigrants and border communities, including measures to end birthright citizenship, send military personnel to the U.S.-Mexico border, and indefinitely suspend refugee resettlement.
“As the proud son of Mexican immigrants who came to this country seeking better opportunities, I know that immigrants are integral to the fabric of our nation. Immigrants are our neighbors, friends, and family members. They’re our doctors, service members, and teachers. They contribute significantly to our communities and economy every day.
These executive orders are cruel, un-American, and – in many cases – blatantly unlawful. And they won’t solve any of the real issues facing our nation. The reality is that the only thing that will ‘fix’ the border is to bring our outdated immigration system into the 21st century. We urgently need comprehensive, humane immigration reform that includes pathways to citizenship, a strengthened system for processing asylum claims fairly and efficiently, and relief for families who have been separated.
The United States is a nation of immigrants strengthened by its diversity. President Trump continues to betray our nation's values through these executive orders.
We will do everything in our power to fight back.”
